What is difficult to adequately assess Adams, not comparing all his books with “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, which still remains one, unique and incomparable masterpiece. “Detective…” funny, cute, fun, ridiculous and contradictory situations and the same ridiculous jokes. But the guide he lacks a certain drive or something.
But even without the frenzied pace in the “Agency” we have are just incredible, seasoned with black humor mixture of detective story, Ghost stories, time travel, music, love, computer technology, aliens, riddles stuck to the sofa (which I haunted the whole book) and incomprehensible at first glance, the connection of all this with Cambridge College and poet Coleridge. And even if such will not be able to interest the fastidious reader, even don’t know what can.
The characters in the book is also wonderful: an eccentric Professor (although any other professors to be?), the owner of the computer company, who cannot live without regular telephone conversations, the programmer who wrote the computer program that translates all the events of the firm/company, and e-my dear monk, programmed to believe in everything. And this all the company looks much nicer and cuter main character.
Anyway, I can’t say that the Dirk gently how the main character is cute. That is, its holistic approach (i.e. he looks at the whole picture, believing that the slightest events are relevant to the case and unlike Sherlock Holmes, not impossible throws for investigation, and only him and seeks) to the unraveling of Affairs is certainly interesting, but he uses it mainly for divorce on the money (which he never paid) the rich old woman to search for their lost cats, and only from time to time come across the really good occasions.
